Why is it so hard to choose … and opt out?

Varför är det så svårt att välja … och välja bort?
Man måste våga för att välja. Och välja bort.
You have to dare to choose. And opt out.

Why is it so hard to choose … and opt out?

One of the most important questions for every company is how to choose. Strategic choices are even more difficult. The difficulty lies not so much in choosing, but in simultaneously opting out of other options. Because to choose means to focus one's efforts and resources in one direction. And opts out of other possibilities. The most important quality is courage.

There is always a reason not to choose.

The most common reason for not choosing is that you do not have all the information. You don't know if the choice is right, or if there are other aspects that you don't know about. And that's probably as true as it isn't. We will simply never have all the information. The choices must be made based on available information, the credibility of the information and a certain amount of gut feeling.

Why do you have to choose?

Of course, you do not have to choose. But a survey shows that one of the qualities employees value most in managers is determination. That they choose and make decisions. The decisions create momentum and get an organization started. It is better to make 10 decisions a day of which 9 are good than to make no decisions at all. It is also the case that the decisions create focus. The company can gather strength and energy and support an election. It gives more effect in itself than spreading out.

Can you change your mind?

In almost all cases, you can go back and change a decision. Or steer slightly to meet one changed environment. Nothing lasts forever. And the best part is that you most likely did not lose anything from your decision. The least you can gain is new insights and a better understanding of your customers, your suppliers and your employees. In addition, there are probably other gains in the previous decision as well. Just the fact that the organization feels that they are pulling in the same direction is often a win in itself.

How do you choose then?

Start with the hard part. To opt out. You don't have to opt out of everything at once. Start by removing the things that nobody likes and that will never be done. When you have selected some options, the way forward usually becomes clear. Then it will also be easier with the next election. It creates focus and a consensus around what is important. Don't forget that you actually have to like your choice if it is to have any effect. The best choices and the best strategy is the one used.
